Hauser & Wirth
Hauser & Wirth is an international art gallery that specializes in modern and contemporary art. The LA location is located in the Arts District in Downtown. Their current exhibit is a super cool light installation by Jason Rhoades. I has seen pictures of the installation and thought it would be a good excuse to go to the Arts District. If you find yourself in the area on a random afternoon (before May 21st) it’s a fun ½ hour to hour exhibit to check out.
The gallery is comprised of two buildings, a large courtyard and a restaurant. The installation takes places in both buildings. The art is supposed to “challenge the conventions of art’s production and display”. I will say that at first glance it did look like a hipster threw out his whole Urban Outfitters wardrobe onto the floor and threw up some neon signs- BUT there is actually a theme of pop culture and historical references that can be found throughout the work.
Definitely worth checking out- even if it’s only for a cool Instagram picture (let’s be real- that all we actually want). Check out Cafe Gratitude or pile up some ice cream at Salt & Straw on your way out. Jason Rhoade’s art installation will be around until May 21st and admission is free.
